Tournament Results

Chase and Travis attended a School Chess Assoc. Tournament on Saturday. It was the Statewide Grade Level Championships. Travis came in second place in the State!! (click for pic) He lost only one game and that was to the Champion! Along the way, Travis beat several of the top contenders!
Chase started out hot with no loses after 2 rounds, but eventually he lost 2 games and finished in 17th of 28 players in the 4th grade.

Tournament Feb 23

Tournament coming up
WHEN: Feb 23. Register at door before 8:30. You'll be done around 3:00.
WHERE: Metcalf Middle School in Burnsville
WHO: Recommended once you get your rating over 300 for those in 3rd grade or younger, or 400 if you are in 4th.
WHAT: Play 5 one-hour games of chess against other students in your grade.
COST: $22, but the Moreland Chess Club will pay half. Let Mr. Heinemann know if you are coming.
WHY: To have fun! And to make you think better and harder than you ever have before!

TOURNAMENT  The School Chess Association typically runs tournaments twice a month. The next tournament is on Feb 23 at Metcalf Middle School (about 20 minutes from Moreland), Cost is $22 for your first tournament but the Moreland chess club will pay half. I'm recommending this one because you play only children in your same grade making it easier for 1st, 2nd and 4th graders. I think Travis would do well. Be there before 8:30 to register at the door. We should be done by 3:00. No elimination - everyone plays 5 games. After the first round you'll be paired with someone with a similar record.

Feb 12 (the club was cancelled on Feb 7)
Today we reviewed pins and did a worksheet.
1) Look for two big pieces on a line
2) Attack the pinned piece with the smallest piece possible
3) Be patient with pins - make your opponent squirm under the pressure
4) You can pin pawns around a king for an effective attack
