Today we learned about a tactic called a fork - attacking two pieces at one time.
We looked at forking the king and queen -
    "King and Queen on teh same color square
      Keep on looking there's a fork there!"
We looked at knight and pawn forks.

TOURAMENT

WHEN: Saturday Dec 7, 2019 from 8:15 to about 3:00

WHERE: Metcalf M.S. in Burnsville

WHO: Anyone pre-school to 12th grade. You will play other children in your same grade.

HOW: To register show up before 8:30 with $22 and money for lunch.

WHY: Have fun, make new friends, earn awards.

Do I have to "make the team"? Nope, not in chess. You are automatically on the team.

If I lose do I go home? No, you'll play 5 games. 

What if I lose m first 3 games? You'll play against someone with the same record.
HOW MANY GAMES WILL I WIN? If it's your first tournament, your goal is to try to win 1 game.

Gift Idea

Chess Sets
At this time of year, I usually put in a group order and order chess sets like the ones we use at chess club. I usually get a good discount by ordering bulk, frequent customer, split shipping, etc. Includes vinyl and cloth roll-up board, pieces with extra queens, large carrying case with handles, sleeve for board and zippered compartment for pieces. We learned the King and Queen checkmate.
1. Push the King to the edge of the board.
2. Put your queen safely in the second row from the edge, trapping the king against the wall
3. Bring your King over to guard the checkmate square.
4. Checkmate with the queen in the "kiss of death" square.

Congratulations to Travis Tressler who won 4 chess games and lost only 1. He placed fourth out of 32 2nd graders and brought home the 4th place trophy.


His rating went up from 563 to 608.

Oct 29

Today we reviewed how the pieces move, how to set them up and a little about check.
We learned 3 ways out of check:
1) take the piece that's checking you
2) block the check
3) move the king
We learned the 4 fast checkmates today. One in 4 moves, 2 in 3 moves and 1 in only 2 moves!
We also learned that you should always start your move by thinking "Why did my opponent move there? What's he up to?
Figure out what your opponent wants to do, then DON'T LET HIM DO IT

First Meeting of Chess Club

LESSONS
Today we learned how all the pieces move and how they are set up at the beginning of the game.
We learned an interesting thing about bishops (If they start on a dark square they will always be on a dark square) and a similar interesting thing about knights (Whenever a knight moves, it moves to a different color square than the one it started on.)
We learned a poem about "A knight on the side".
We also learned why rooks are more comfortable in a corner than any other piece.

RATINGS
I keep ratings for a number of reasons. I have a rubric which seems to give a rating approximately equal to a USCF (United States Chess Federation) rating.
1. If makes kids play hard every game.
2. It lets kids see their progress
3. It enables children to play against players of their own approximate strength
4. I want to know when a student is ready for tournament play.
5. If we have a chess match against another school, I need to know our top players

New Chess Year Start Date Changed

The first meeting of the Moreland Chess Club for year 2019-2020 will be Oct 22. (Delayed one week due to Parent/Teacher conferences.)
We will meet in the IMC (same as last year).

Tournament Results

We did very well for a new program.
In the Elementary Section, Maize scored an amazing 4 points placing in the top half.
Chase added 1.5 points for a total of 5.5 points good for 29th place out of 52 schools.
In Primary, Travis and Addi each scored 3 points. Their 6 point total was good for 16th place of 44 schools. We were 2.5 points away from a team trophy, but if we had 2 more players, we might ave been able to do it.
